Lend Lease has won the job to refurbish Stage 6 of the BBC television centre, part of the wider development of the iconic site
The Stage 6 project is part of the wider reworking of the Grade II-listed doughnut-shaped building at Wood Lane in West London that is being developed by Stanhope, which bought the building for £200m last year.
The Grade II-listed parts of the building will be retained while a number of perimeter buildings will be demolished and redeveloped into a mixed-use development to include office and studio space for the BBC.
The main feature of the refurbished Stage 6 will be a new lightwell with a bespoke ribbon-like staircase running down through the middle of the building.
According to construction information provider Barbour/ABI, the job is worth £23m.
This will give the new tenants ample helpings of natural light as well as a unique staircase to access the floors.
Simon Hipperson, chief executive of Lend Lease in EMEA, said: “We are excited to be working with the BBC again and we look forward to strengthening further the relationship that delivered MediaCityUK in Salford and Broadcasting House in London.â€
Work started on site last month and is due for completion in late 2014.
