Mark Wallinger’s 50m sculpture of a horse wins competition for art project in £3bn Ebbsfleet development
A 50m horse is to be built at the entrance to Land Securities’ £3bn Ebbsfleet development as a southern rival to Antony Gormley’s “Angel of the Northâ€
The equine structure is the brainchild of artist Mark Wallinger, a former Turner Prize winner whose works include a reconstruction of the Iraq War protest in Parliament Square.
Wallinger was named winner of the competition this morning. He will now work with Gravesham Council to put together a planning application for the 50m sculpture.
Victoria Pomery, chair of the judging panel that chose Wallinger, said: “Mark is a superb artist of world renown and his sculpture will become a real landmark for Ebbsfleet and the whole region.â€
If approved by the local planning authorities, it is hoped the gigantic horse will be built by 2012. It seemed less clear this morning when the Ebbsfleet development would be finished – Land Securities admitted to Ðǿմ«Ã½ that the scheme has been “scaled back due to the downturn.â€
