Three market leaders from the logistics, waste and recycling industries, Endeva, Biffa and EMR, have joined forces to develop a national scheme for redundant electrical appliances.

Transform should help contractors comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. This European-led Directive comes into UK law in 2004 and will place new environmental burdens on manufacturers, retailers and contractors.

The three firms are committed to helping the UK meet the legislation. Endeva will provide consumer take-back, using its existing service network. It will also continue to facilitate appliance reuse. Biffa will collect electrical waste from businesses, civic amenity sites and retailers. EMR's role is to carry out treatment and recycling of electrical waste.

Transform will also make recycling easier for local authorities and consumers. A range of services will be considered, including enhanced segregation at civic amenity sites and special envelopes for householders to post small items of electrical waste for recycling.
