Construction industry thinking is cyclical and predictable. So now we don't need academic studies for construction managers. Consider the motives of a commercial sector where cost is everything. What's the minimum the client will accept?
How can we do the job cheaper? Unqualified staff are cheaper, so let's carry on handing over defective projects with latent defects. Who cares about the customer?
The cycle is this:
- Close down BSc courses and sack the staff
- Employ cheap managers
- Hand over defective construction
- Moan about the lack of available skilled managers when the client complains about standards
What is needed is the vision to transform completely from a craft-led industry to a technology-led industry. This requires qualified managers who are allowed to be innovative. Let's not sell construction managers short. The CIOB status should continue to be a combination of approved training, experience, and academic qualifications.
