Talk about shooting yourself in the foot! Is the CIOB really a professional organisation representing construction management professionals in the industry? If so, the statement by Graham Watts of CIC beggars belief. 鈥淭eaching is not up to scratch,鈥 he says. What evidence is this outlandish and unhelpful statement based on?
I am sure students would also be interested in the views of Chris Blythe when he opines 鈥済etting a 2:2 in any degree is pointless from an economic point of view鈥. Real words of encouragement for the 40% of school leavers of all abilities accessing higher education to improve their job prospects and development.
The view that is implied by the statements made by Sheila Hoile in the article that CM degrees are of less value than business degrees displays an alarming ignorance of the purpose and value of Higher Education.
A degree should not be regarded as just an HND delivered in a different setting. The value to the students and to society of raising the educational levels is significant. Many graduates from 鈥榲ocational鈥 degree programmes immediately find work outside the vocational sector indicated by their degree.
A university degree should not be measured in terms of its ability to deliver narrow subject-specific skills but in its ability to provide the knowledge-based transferable skills on which the future of the British economy - including the construction industry - will be based.
