The aim of the funding is to support industry-led proposals across technologies such as energy crops and biofuels, photovoltaics, offshore wind, wave, tidal stream, fuel cells and embedded generation.
Wilson commented: "The potential prize is huge. The UK now has the chance to contribute to world-sized solutions, but against many potential competitors. But the opportunity is now. Others will seize the advantage if we do not."
M The UK has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with representatives of Thailand's Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (MOSTE).
The DTI has identified Thailand as a key market for renewables technologies. The MoU will establish a relationship between energy agencies in both countries to promote their renewable energy sectors.
The first schemes will be a review of cost-effective power generation from sustainable forests in Thailand and a seminar on the commercialisation of sustainable energy technologies.
