Brian Wilson has called on UK industry to win a share of the billion pound global renewables industry before it's too late.
Speaking at the All energy opportunities conference in Aberdeen, Wilson invited bids for the latest round of the Sustainable energy r&d programme. This will allocate up to £15 million of DTI funds to support research and development in the renewables field.

The aim of the funding is to support industry-led proposals across technologies such as energy crops and biofuels, photovoltaics, offshore wind, wave, tidal stream, fuel cells and embedded generation.

Wilson commented: "The potential prize is huge. The UK now has the chance to contribute to world-sized solutions, but against many potential competitors. But the opportunity is now. Others will seize the advantage if we do not."

M The UK has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with representatives of Thailand's Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (MOSTE).

The DTI has identified Thailand as a key market for renewables technologies. The MoU will establish a relationship between energy agencies in both countries to promote their renewable energy sectors.

The first schemes will be a review of cost-effective power generation from sustainable forests in Thailand and a seminar on the commercialisation of sustainable energy technologies.
