A new village in Nottinghamshire is vying with BedZED and Greenwich Millennium Village for the title of Britain's greenest community. Situated on the site of a former colliery, Sherwood Energy Village in Ollerton includes a host of green technologies such as biomass power generation, wind and solar power, water recycling and sustainable urban drainage.

The 80 mixed-tenure homes and 25 live/ work units being built on the 40 ha site will use local suppliers where possible, to ensure a high score on the Government's new Environmental Performance Indicators, which measure projects' carbon dioxide emissions, water use, biodiversity, waste and transport use.

In open areas standalone PV lampposts will be used to avoid disturbing parkland. The infrastructure is currently being built and work on the first homes will start next year.
