Homelessness charity Shelter has called for urgent government action after census figures revealed that 12% of British children live in overcrowded accommodation.
The figures from the 2001 study, published on Wednesday, show that the situation is particularly bad for Muslim children. Two-fifths experience overcrowding and one in eight lives in housing with no central heating, double the national average.
Adam Sampson, director of Shelter, said: "We need re-evaluation of the relationship between the benefits system, poverty and housing."
The number of children in jobless households has grown to more than 2 million, up 50% on the census of 1991. In addition, 58,000 live in homes two or more storeys above the ground, despite evidence that high-rise housing is not suitable for young families.
