Antisocial behaviour powers are to be extended to social housing providers in Northern Ireland, the government has said.
Northern Irish MPs, encouraged by the success of antisocial behaviour orders in England and Wales, have been pressing the government for a decision.

Rev Martin Smythe, MP for Belfast South, spearheaded the campaign. He said: "More power must be given to police and local authorities to deal with people who are ruining the lives of their neighbours."

In a written response to Smythe's parliamentary question, Paul Murphy, secretary of state for Northern Ireland, said: "I am considering whether something similar to an antisocial behaviour order could be developed."

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Office said new legislative measures were being examined, but he did not know when any decision would be made.
