First phase of former Llanwern steelworks approved

Housebuilder Persimmon has been given planning consent for the 307-home first phase of its redevelopment of the former Llanwern Steelworks near Newport, designed by Barton Willmore.

The permission is the first detailed approval on the overall £1bn Glan Llyn masterplan from Persimmon and developer St Modwen, which envisages 4,000 homes and 6,000 jobs on the site alongside schools, shops a police station and a library.

Barton Willmore design director Avril Chadwick, said: “Glan Llyn is a landmark development, helping to transform a former brownfield site into a vibrant urban community. This is only the first phase of the development and will form just one part in the wider regeneration of Newport.â€

Savills acted as planning consultant for the project.
