£350m project will see scheme built on site of 1960s shopping centre
Norwich City Council has signed a deal with regeneration investor Aviva Capital to build a 1,100-home development on the site of a shopping centre.
The partnership will see the 11-acre Anglia Square site redeveloped to provide 1,100 homes, along with leisure facilities, community space and shops.
The project will take eight years in total and is estimated to create 3,500 jobs.
Homes England awarded a £34m grant to enable Norwich City Council to purchase the site in December.
Mike Stonard, leader of Norwich City Council, said: “I believe our partnership with Aviva, which has called Norwich home since 1792, will come to be seen as an historical partnership in one of England’s most historic cities.
“The partnership will turbo charge the city’s economy and support our ambition to make Norwich one of England’s finest and fairest cities.”

The Anglia Square site was put up for sale last year after housebuilder Weston Homes for the site. It cited several governmental factors that impacted the project’s viability, including a call from former housing minister Robert Jenrick to overturn the 2018 local planning consent and the planning inspector’s recommendation to approve.
Meanwhile, the council’s cabinet last week voted to liquidate its housebuilding company Lion Homes.
The housebuilder is set to be liquidated .
Lion Homes, previously known as Norwich Regeneration Limited, made years of losses, with Norwich City Council liable to lose up to £10m.
