The government is planning to make changes to the New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) to help smaller power generators operate more effectively.
NETA has often been criticised for creating a market which is difficult for generators of renewable energy in particular.
In response, the government produced a consultation document and has now identified further action to help smaller generators.
This includes working with Ofgem to look at the unbundling of embedded benefits which might then be offered directly to smaller generators. This change should improve their commercial position.
Also, smaller generators would be allowed to notify their predicted output closer to real time. This would be particularly helpful for renewable generation techniques such as wind power.
Further assessment will follow after a year of NETA operation.
