Britain's innovators can make the most of their creative ideas with the help of a new guide called Managing Intellectual Property.
Produced jointly by the DTI, the Patent Office, Universities UK and the Association of University Research and Industry Links, the guide shares good practice found in UK universities in managing intellectual property.

It provides strategic advice to universities on how to safeguard their creations and inventions as well as guidelines on budget management and how to reduce investment risks.

Managing Intellectual Property also gives advice on collaboration between universities to manage intellectual property, and guidance on how university managers can identify problems and opportunities relating to intellectual property management.

Launching the scheme, science minister, Lord Sainsbury commented: "The UK has some of the best scientific brains in the world. Helping turn their new ideas into prosperity and jobs is essential in maintaining the strength of the UK economy.

"By managing intellectual property effectively the UK can take full advantage of research, bringing potential improvements in quality of life, and increased prosperity. I hope the advice in this guide will support our universities in turning brilliant research into excellent business."

Copies of the guide are available from the Patent Office website at www.patent.gov.uk. Case studies are also available by from the DTI press office on 020 7215 6140.
