Rethinking Construction champion Don Leeper urges CIBSE members to play leadership role through its commitment to Egan agenda.
CIBSE's Rethinking Construction champion, Don Leeper, has urged the Institution to bring the rethinking agenda to the heart of its operations.

Commenting at the recent CIBSE conference, he said: "To play its leadership role properly, the Institution must drive forward an agenda for continuous improvement and focus on the customer.

"It must communicate the necessary cultural changes throughout the Institution and ensure that all members appreciate the value of such changes.

"This is not just about technical skills, but also about ethics and values. This is where the actions of the Institution are central to the achievement of the Egan initiatives. If Rethinking is to be a success, CIBSE and the other institutions must play their part."

The conference also saw calls for an increase in the use of energy efficient products, such as combined heat and power (chp).

Julian Amey, chief executive of CIBSE explained how the New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) are causing reluctance in the take-up of chp.

He demanded that the government recognise and address these difficulties: "CIBSE believes it is important that the use of renewable energy sources is encouraged and the government should be sending clear signals to investors that systems such as chp are its preferred choice compared to traditional systems. There is a need for incentive as well as taxation arrangements which will provide an acceptable return on investment."
