What an informative and timely article that was on the housing problems for ex-service personnel ("Forces sweethearts", 2 May, page 28).

As with previous engagements, the current Gulf hostilities will conclude, for some of those involved, in physical or mental damage that will require specialist support to ensure they can live independently in the community with a reasonable quality of life.

In the past, government agencies and ex-service welfare organisations have not always provided this effectively, with the net result that too many of those who have served their country have subsequently led wasted lives – unemployed, homeless and socially excluded.

It's a sad fact that, since the Falklands War, fewer personnel have been injured in combat than the number of ex-service personnel who have committed suicide.

Agencies such as Combat Stress and the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation are endeavouring to put together outreach services with housing and support, and using the excellent aid networks established by the Royal British Legion and SSAFA Forces Help.

However, the sector needs to learn more about this issue and about the resources available for ex-service personnel in these circumstances.

The Ex-Service Action Group on Homelessness has produced a leaflet detailing resources in London, where the problem is most manifest.
