Transfer of Dumfries & Galloway's 12,000 council homes has been approved.
Scotland's social justice minister, Margaret Curran, gave her approval to the transfer last week, marking the end of a turbulent period for stock transfer. Scotland's first three large-scale transfers – Glasgow, Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway – have all been completed, despite suffering delays.
Dumfries & Galloway Housing Trust will take over the stock and plans to invest more than £500m in it over the next 30 years. The UK Treasury has settled the council's historic housing debt of £92m.
Meanwhile, a consultation paper from the Scottish Executive has confirmed that housing finance would be within the scope of the prudential borrowing regime, which will be in place by April 2004.
Only a limited number of councils are expected to benefit, however.
As predicted by Housing Today last week, plans were also unveiled for a Scottish social housing standard.
