Dual technology units offer the benefits of both passive infra red and (most often) microwave detection
Anti-cloak breakthrough
Rokonet has introduced the iWISE intruder detector series incorporating ACT – Anti-Cloak Technology. Rokonet believes this is a "significant breakthrough" in asset protection.

"The challenge facing customers of dual technology detectors is the relative vulnerability of the PIR channel," claims Rokonet. "An elusive burglar may use an IR emission-blocking cloak or screen."

ACT is criteria-driven automatic switching from dual channel PIR/ microwave mode to single-channel MW alarm triggering and back. ACT will cope with any attempt by a burglar using camouflage techniques to conceal his IR radiation. ACT identifies this situation by utilising unique pattern recognition algorithms within the powerful microprocessor of the iWISE, and automatically switches the detector to trigger alarms based on detection from the microwave channel for a predefined window of time.

ACT also "overcomes PIR technology's limitation of poor detection sensitivity when the ambient temperature is close to body temperature". When this occurs the detector automatically switches to single channel microwave triggering of alarms.

Rokonet UK sales manager Steve Littler commented: "The innovative Anti-Cloak Technology enables customers to benefit from both worlds: dual technology's immunity to false alarms, together with the higher detection capability of the microwave channel."

Separate range adjustments
The Micra 8 from Guardall is an integrated PIR and microwave with adjustable 8m or 4m coverage, described as a cost effective alternative to traditional PIRs.

Application Specific Integrated Chip (ASIC) technology improves reliability, while precision microstrip technology produces a highly efficient operation at extremely low power levels and minimum cost.

There are separate range adjustments for both technologies; a white light filter rejects fluorescent light sources; and it has generous and accessible wiring space.

Available accessories include low profile bracket and ceiling mount bracket.

For conservatories
From Visonic comes the NEXT Duo, a single compact unit comprising advanced infrared and microwave technologies and featuring the same performance and reliability as all models in the NEXT range. Visonic says it is suitable for conservatories and garages, which experience regular changes in temperature.

By using digital technology, false alarms are reduced without compromising detection capabilities. Faster detection is also given, together with comprehensive all-round coverage and no dead spots, due to its optical system.

The detectors also use Visonic's 3D lenses, which are said to require less adjustment than conventional lenses, minimising installation time.

Fully sealed optics
The Scantronic 460 Twintec indoor detector combines "state-of-the-art" microwave and PIR technologies in a single unit, which should be used where the environment of the installation to be protected is turbulent.

The 460 is suitable for home, office or light commercial buildings. Designed to fit with any décor, it is stylish and compact, robust and discreet. Manufacturer Cooper Security claims: "The Scantronic 460 uses the latest technology and represents the future in signal processing and optical lens technology to lead the industry in detection accuracy, false alarm immunity and reliability. The 460 uses modern techniques which eliminate the many types of interference that affect reliability of traditional detectors to guarantee superior long-term performance and reduce false alarms."

This detector has a coverage pattern of 12m by 90 degrees which can be adjusted to suit your installation requirements, with temperature compensation and an advanced white light filter built in to minimise false alarms.

Fully sealed optics provide protection against dust, draught and insect ingress, offering a high level of environmental immunity.

New concept: 2 PIRs
A variation of the dual technology theme comes from Optex Europe, whose Sequad is two independent PIRs inside one housing. They provide two non-overlapping coverage patterns with two independent alarm outputs, giving the unit the ability to create reliable sequentially confirmed activations in accordance with current regulations.

Installation should be easy because the Sequad only requires one standard eight-core cable, thus making upgrading easier as installers only need to remove existing detectors and re-wire Sequad detectors to existing cable.

There are two products in the Sequad range. Both provide wide-angled 85-degree coverage. The SQ-40 covers 12 x 12m and the SQ-60 covers 18 x 18m. Both units incorporate a host of Optex-patented technologies, including patented quad zone logic, advanced temperature compensation and noise reduction processing.

Streamlined casing
Double the protection and you double the peace of mind, DSC believes. While some dual technology detectors use a secondary sensing system as a back-up, Force 2 sees double by detecting intruders in two distinct ways – PIR and microwave.

It is easy to install and guaranteed to work first time as it comes 100 per cent factory tested and with a five-year warranty. The detector's small size and streamlined casing blends in unobtrusively with any décor.
