Europe’s first lightweight, compact radiation detection system capable of detecting low energy radiation levels such as those found in ‘dirty’ bombs has been launched by Corus, the international metals group.
The system – designated Redeem – can detect low level gamma radiation and even neutron sources as packages and/or people pass within approximately four metres of the unit.

Suitable locations for installation include those buildings at risk from potential terrorist attack or departments such as post rooms and baggage handling facilities where there’s a need to screen for radioactivity.

According to Corus representative Les Swain, the typical cost of a commercial system to the end user is £9,500, but that’s a small price to pay considering that ‘dirty’ bombs – when detonated – can be devastating due to the radioactive material contained within them.

The launch of the new product comes at a time of heightened security awareness in the UK in the face of an increased risk from terrorist and criminal involvement in the smuggling and attempted procurement of radioactive materials.
