Why is construction unpopular? Surely the real question - which no one at thinktanks, conferences or in the pages of your journal will face up to - is why should an industry attract any applicants at all when it:
  • kills and injures such an unacceptably high number of its own employees;
  • provides such appalling working conditions that government was forced to legislate for basic working conditions and which still are only at a minimum level;
  • has one of the lowest investment rates in R & D of any UK industry;
  • is dominated by self-interest groups and restrictive practices which makes the provision of a rational training and education programme all but impossible.

Industry will not face up to these facts because to address these problems will cost money, which it is not prepared to invest.
