Speaking at the Electrical Distributors Association's (EDA) annual dinner on 13 March, Lawson stated: "Counterfeiting is a serious and growing problem and is a major problem in the overseas market.
The problems of counterfeiting and its consequences for safety must be tackled warns Stephen Lawson, managing director of Lawson Fuses.

"In our industry there is adequate concern about safety, and counterfeiting has serious safety issues. Even if copying and passing off is not strictly illegal it has serious consequences."

He added that many problems occur due to the lack of advice and back-up available to those who buy and use such products: "Counterfeiters can't offer sensible guidance or provide assistance if problems occur."

One of the reasons that counterfeit products can be sold at lower prices than reputable versions is a lack of expenditure at the development stages.

m The EDA has reinstated the title of president to the Association. Nigel Power, marketing director of Rexel Senate is taking up the position.
