Three northern towns and villages that were rapidly becoming ghost towns after being badly hit by pit closures have had a remarkable revival due to the regenerative effects of CCTV.
Castleford, Hemsworth and South Emsall, which surround the city of Wakefield, were becoming targets for ram raiders and thieves, until the City turned to the use of CCTV.

CCTV installer, Quadrant, used Pentax lenses utilising the zooms in the main system to cover car parks, underpasses, shopping centres and residential streets linked to an alarm system covering every major school in the area. In the latest phase of the operation in Castleford, TIS Mansfield have installed a further 17 Pentax 8-120mm lenses, and Pontefract is also set to be linked to the CCTV system next year.

Wakefield鈥檚 CCTV supervisor, Darren Pollington, says the cameras have had a remarkable effect, and there is now 鈥渘ot a single empty unit in the village, and business is thriving again鈥�. Images are collected locally from the cameras and fed via fibre optics to the Wakefield central control room, which has doubled in size since it first came on line. Among the biggest successes is the reduction of car crime at Castleford, which is claimed to have been cut by 50% in just six months. 鈥淐ar parks were simply not safe and were always being targeted by thieves. We believe CCTV is stamping it out,鈥� said Mr Pollington.
