Mental health scheme manager for Ashram Group’s Fernley Gardens scheme in Birmingham
Job description
“To assess the clients’ needs so that, in 18 months’ to two years’ time, they can develop the skills for independent living.â€
Old job
“Deputy manager of a scheme in Moseley, Birmingham for people with severe and enduring mental health problems.â€
What did you want to be when you were a child?
“A doctor.â€
How did you get interested in mental health?
“While I was planning to go into general nursing, I visited a friend in hospital who had developed bipolar disorder. She was badly let down by her care. That’s when I decided to go into mental health nursing, to make a difference. Now, I really enjoy the people, being able to give them the quality and equality they deserve.â€
Any advice for people getting into mental health work?
“Eradicate the fear of what mental health is, keep an open mind and keep yourself well-informed about the latest developments in the field. My career is not for one sector of people but for everyone. Asian people should be pushed towards nursing more, especially women.â€
If you were health minister, what would you do?
“Increase the budget, make people more aware of mental health issues – and pay nurses better.â€
Favourite book
“The Neotech Discovery by Frank R Wallace.â€
Favourite film
“Amar Akbar Anthony.â€
Housing situation
“Private-sector rented.â€
Who would you most like to interview and what would you ask?
“Nelson Mandela. I would ask him to tell me about his life, what he has learned and how it has made him who he is today.â€
Tell us something we don’t know?
“I played in the England under-16 netball team.â€
Where do you plan to be in 10 years’ time?
“Hopefully laughing, happy and in good health.â€
