The Carbon Trust and BAA have announced a major energy efficiency partnership. The partnership's activities will be delivered through Action Energy, a Trust programme.
The aim is to reduce carbon emissions from BAA's seven UK airports, including Heathrow. BAA's objective is to cut carbon to 5% below 1990 levels, by March 2010 – a saving of around 110 000 tonnes of CO2. Some progress has already been made. Energy consumption at Heathrow has fallen by 16% over the past four years. And the new satellite building at Stansted has been designed to produce less than half of the carbon dioxide emissions of its earlier counterparts.
The plan for further cuts includes use of renewable energy and energy conservation measures, investment in technology, and changing staff behaviour.
The Carbon Trust will provide BAA with bi-annual reviews, implementation advice, training programmes, benchmarking, as well as advice on data monitoring and internal emissions trading schemes.
The Trust will use the findings and experience from this partnership to improve delivery of its programmes to promote energy efficiency and carbon emission reductions.
