Market renewal pathfinders must include plans for public spaces in their housing renewal strategies, the government's architecture watchdog has warned.
Jon Rouse, chief executive of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, said: "CABE Space will be working with all nine pathfinders and hopefully the single housing inspectorate to ensure a public realm strategy is built into all strategies."
But Brendan Nevin, director of housing market renewal at the North Staffordshire pathfinder, said extra cash would be needed.
He said: "CABE should be lobbying to ensure the resources are in place. We are trying to do something similar but we cannot fund it."
