Security International's chief executive Chris Brogan has sent out a warning to all security managers responsible for Data Protection issues concerning an extraordinary fraud. Apparently, there are a number of organisations now in existence that purport to be an extension of the Information Commissioner's office – and charge a princely £95 to assist companies with their notification.
"This is a total con," said Brogan. "You only have to pay £35 per annum to notify the Information Commissioner that you are processing personal data under the Data Protection Act 1998."
The bogus names to be ignored include: the Data Protection Act Registration Service, Data Protection Agency Services Ltd, the Data Protection Registration Agency, the Data Collection Enforcement Agency, the Data Registration Agency and the DPA Registration Agency.
