And what are the cost differentials between conventional prox card access control and the very latest biometric systems?
If you're looking for detailed answers to technical specification questions then look no further than 'Ask The Expert', a free and dedicated service to end users launched this month in another pioneering move by Security Management Today (SMT) – the industry's leading journal for security professionals.
Every month, we will introduce two companies (either manufacturers or service providers) who are recognised experts in their particular field – be it CCTV, access control, intruder alarms, perimeter security, central stations, fire alarms or locking systems, etc.
Readers will then be able to go online (at www.smtdirect.co.uk), click on the 'Ask The Expert' icon and e-mail their technical question to the company's designated expert(s).
Answers will be e-mailed back to you usually within 24 hours of receipt, and will be as detailed as possible. They'll also appear on the SMT web site, and will be archived so that you and other readers can return to different topic areas as and when you wish. This will make for a powerful online security resource which can then be used in conjunction with our already up-and-running Internet-based magazine archive search tool.
It's important to stress that the SMT Experts Online system actually allows answers sent to you to contain tabular material, working diagrams, explanatory images and even pdf files. That way, we are able to offer you truly comprehensive feedback.
From this edition onwards, these two pages will run in each month's SMT so that you'll know well in advance which security experts will be appearing. Thus you'll have plenty of time to draft your questions.
Make sure you keep an eye out for the top Questions and Answers from the previous month as well, as this will give you an idea of what's being stored in our archive.
GPS Perimeter Systems: Monday 7 April to Sunday 20 April
Northampton-based GPS Perimeter SYSTEMS is a well-established provider of cost-effective security systems for the detection of would-be intruders. A subsidiary of GPS Standard, the company specialises in the creation of perimeter protection systems integrated with the most advanced remote surveillance applications. The company offers several products and systems for end users. Its buried detection products comprise pressure-sensitive, fluid-filled tubes which provide a flexible, covert detection system. Once installed, the system is invisible to the naked eye (making it ideal for those projects where aesthetics are crucial). While the tubes may be installed under virtually any surface, a unique differential detection principle ensures that the system is immune to almost all environmental effects. Included in the company’s IPS infrared barrier system range are both dual and infrared beam systems that can be mounted in neat, unobtrusive columns. All systems can detect and compensate for adverse visibility, while the target crossing speed for alarm is selectable. Meantime, the CPS and CPS+ microphonic cable systems may be attached to fences or walls and, when correctly analysed, will detect disturbances caused by any attempted intrusion. The sensors are suitable for use on most types of security fence (including chain link, welded mesh and rigid paling). The WPS sensitive wire detection system comprises a taut wire which is sensitive to intruder movement. The wire configuration is highly versatile, such that it can be installed vertically or horizontally, with or without existing physical fences or walls (this makes it ideal for protecting the tops of perimeter walling or fencing where there are many changes of either level or direction). GPS’ designated expert is managing director John Bowerman. Initially employed as a development engineer for GEC, John progressed to running a central systems engineering support group while providing systems design and field support to regional installation offices. In 1980 he moved to Chubb Alarms to take on the role of product manager. It was here that John first became involved in external perimeter detection as part of an engineering group responsible for evaluating and introducing a range of external systems to the company. At the end of 1986, John moved on to Phase Security (the representative for several European manufacturers of external detection systems) and then, in 1999, decided to form GPS Perimeter Systems as a solutions provider. John has been involved in the specification, installation and support of all types of external detection system for more than 20 years. He’s been directly involved in projects throughout the world, including the US, Korea, the Middle East and most European countries.Verint Systems (Loronix): Monday 21 April to Sunday 4 May
Founded in 1987, Loronix Video Solutions (supplied by VERINT SYSTEMS) is a leading provider of networked digital video management systems, delivering to multiple industries in over 36 countries worldwide. The Loronix Video Intelligence Platform delivers the latest in video content analysis tools to generate and deliver Actionable Intelligence to the right person at the right time. This Intelligence helps security staff to make better and faster decisions, whether protecting physical sites or people, being able to react pro-actively to incidents and safeguard lives and assets. Loronix video solutions capture, digitise, compress and store large quantities of digital video, enabling customers to manage, control and integrate digital video data throughout their enterprise network in a cost-effective and easy-to-use manner. Today, Loronix is part of Verint Systems Inc, a publicly-traded company (NASDAQ:VRNT) that provides analytic software solutions for communications interception as well as digital video. The Loronix Networked Digital Video Management System (NDVMS), for example, is a scalable solution that provides for an organisation’s security and surveillance needs as well as offering electronic business intelligence tools for the increased efficiency of operations. The protection of lives and assets is an ever-increasing concern among organisations around the world. With the Loronix video solution in place, a security official can literally have thousands of camera eyes on the organisation’s staff and its assets without needing myriads of officers to monitor those camera inputs. With automated alarm capabilities, Loronix creates Actionable Intelligence by notifying its user(s) that an incident is occurring in real-time. With either an audible or visual signal the software will alarm when certain activities are taking place. This feature can be customised to the user’s specific needs. For example, if a member of the security team needs to know every time a specific door is accessed, they’ll be alarmed on that specific activity. Alarm automation becomes even more powerful when Loronix is integrated with systems such as access control devices, barcode scanners, facial recognition and EPOS. With both hardware and software offerings, Loronix boasts a solution to fit all end user needs. From one location to a global enterprise-level network, Loronix video solutions are adaptable to meet every application. Loronix has put forward four experts for the company’s two-week advice slot. They are David Watts (EMEA sales director), Chris Garden (UK sales manager), Richard Price (pre-sales technical engineer) and Mike Wilkinson (pre-sales technical engineer). More details on each of these experts will be posted on SMT’s web site at www.smtdirect.co.ukSource
