Bids for the third round of arm's-length management organisations totalled £1.6bn – an increase of £100m on the amount indicated in April when councils initially expressed an interest
The total represents the largest bidding round for ALMOs to date. It involves 14 local authorities and 225,000 homes.
Round-two bids totalled £1.16bn.
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister will now assess each bid before outlining the allocations ALMOs will receive when they achieve the two-star rating required for ALMO status.
The ODPM has set aside £700m for allocation to ALMOs in rounds three and four in 2004/05 and 2005/06.
The bids were: Barnet, £89m; Camden, £282m; Easington, £111m; Gateshead, £232m; Harrow, £12m; High Peak, £9m; Islington, £157m; Milton Keynes, £74m; Newcastle, £348m; Poole, £28m; Sheffield, £145m; Solihull, £63m; South Lakeland, £21m; Warrington, £38m.
