The collection of articles begins with the very basics, 'Why save energy?'.
By building services engineering standards, the book is in very simple terms. However, students may find this book useful as it gives some very clear explanations of concepts such as thermal transmittance (the U-value), including example calculations of U-values. Not then, a guide for experts with many years' experience, but something which could give undergraduates an early grasp of the fundamentals of low energy design. It may also be useful reading for clients aiming to bring low energy principles into their future building requirements.
Specialists at BRE have organised and edited the volume. Writing and development of Low energy design was undertaken by Richard Nichols of the department of architecture at Huddersfield University. ActionEnergy is a programme run by the Carbon Trust.
