Kaiser permanent, America's largest health plan provider is installing NKL Cash Handling systems equipped with Bioscrypt fingerprint access readers throughout its facilities in California.
Patient co-payments to health insurance plans are on the rise and physician practices are collecting increasingly larger sums of cash creating a growing security concern in health care facilities. Kaiser-Permanente made a decision to invest $3 million dollars in FKI Security Group's NKL Cash Handling systems.
"We made the decision to replace existing drop safes with intelligent safes that offer cash dispensing and biometrics entry,"said Jeri Bennett for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. "Our primary goal was to decrease the distance an employee had to travel in a building to make deposits. We see this as a very real life safety issue for employees." Biometrics is seen as an important part of employee safety and loss prevention because it offers positive authentication with a fingerprint. PINs, encryption keys, and passwords need to be changed often and are easily forgotten.
'Adults only' goods under watchful eye
Teleeye remote monitoring equipment is performing age verification for the operation of unmanned adult goods vending machines in Japan. According to Japanese government regulation, companies are required to conduct age verification before selling adult goods to customers. Operation of unmanned adult goods vending machines presents a big headache for companies that run unmanned shops open 24 hours a day. Window Ltd, a franchised adult goods vending machine company has installed TeleEye to monitor vending machines and perform age verification in its 12 unmanned shops in Kanazawa Ishikawa.
All videos are transmitted back to a central monitoring centre and received by using the TeleEye 16-site receiving software WRS3-M16. Each shop is equipped with TeleEye III+ 2-channel Video Transmitter (Model: VT3-2CA) and two cameras. One of the cameras looks at the customer's face while the other records his driving license or ID certificate before allowing him to enter the shop.
Once entering the shop, the customer will trigger the TeleEye III+ video transmitter that will send a signal back to the central monitoring centre. Operators can verify his age according to the video from the two cameras. If the procedure of age verification passes, the operator will open the door in the unmanned shop remotely through the TeleEye system so that the customer can enter the shop and buy the adult goods.
Contactless smartcard
French manufaturer Sagem has introduced the Morphoaccess 220, a biometric terminal providing the ability to identify fingerprints and contactless smart cards at the same time. When the cardholder puts his/her finger on the optical sensor, the system's algorithms match the captured fingerprint against the template stored on the card.
