The Royal Motor Yacht Club, which enjoys a prestigious location in Sandbanks, Poole, was refurbished last year with a fenestration package that includes Kawneer systems and Pilkington glass, supplied by Nicholls & Clarke.

Marco Glass & Glazing, a Bournemouth based fabricator and installer of Kawneer products, undertook the contract in five weeks. The main contractor was Greendale Construction.

The facelift features Kawneer 1202 curtain wall with Kawneer GT70 window inserts and 605 series French doors, all thermally broken. Sealed units, supplied by Nicholls & Clarke, were typically 2 metres by 2.4m high, made up of 6mm clear toughened with 6mm toughened softcoat, argon filled.

The fire exit uses a firescreen supplied by Wrightstyle Ltd. Balustrading on the roof terrace was handled by another specialist contractor.

‘It is a marine environment so we specified Syntha Pulvin powder coat matt finish on the Kawneer profiles', says Russell Watkins, a partner at Marco Glass & Glazing.

‘Weather and window loadings had to be taken into account so we had to increase the depth of the building's side elevation', he adds.

In-house expertise

The Royal Motor Yacht Club has its own in-house glazing expert: Michael Tombes, who is Vice Commodore at the club, and a retired partner in Dorset Glass, with relatives running the business today.

‘I had to declare an interest so my own company couldn't do the job', he admits, but is very complimentary about Marco's installation. ‘I virtually told them what I wanted', he adds.

The club's dining area was sectioned off during the refurbishment, but otherwise disruption was minimal.
