As an industry we seem to have learnt little in nearly ten years. I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Ðǿմ«Ã½ in 1987. After seven years of frustration in the industry I decided to leave construction and go into teaching. But my degree was not recognised at the time as being of any relevance to teaching anything, and so I remained in construction. Then, as now, my degree was not recognised in the industry and less recognised by the public at large.

There are many companies now that have embraced technology, career development and modern working practices and they should be applauded. But many deep-rooted problems remain, which those at the top in industry and academia have done so little to address.

A properly structured degree course with industry backing and onward training and development is invaluable. But it will take more than navel gazing and brow beating to raise the construction degree above a BA in Holiday Repping or Golf Course Management.
