A new training pack from CIRIA aims to help the industry soften its impact on the local ecology. The pack addresses the fundamentals of ecology, legislation and the relationship between wildlife and construction projects. It also contains training sessions on specific habitats and species. The emphasis is on knowing your site. The basic framework for approaching the issue goes something like this:
  • Always consider the potential impact of your project on wildlife and habitat, whether the site is large or small
  • Get everybody interested in the wildlife issues
  • If you can’t avoid disrupting habitat, provide full mitigation or compensation, taking note of the accepted good practice
  • Use an ecologist early in the development process and make them part of the project team
  • Avoid costly delays by programming any surveys into the process as soon as possible
  • Ensure that any staff and subcontractors on site are aware of any special requirements with respect to wildlife and have been properly trained to meet these requirements
