Whilst the proposals to construct new nuclear plants and develop renewables have predictably captured most of the headlines, the government’s long-awaited Energy Review is predicated on the need to use the energy we already generate more efficiently.
The non domestic sector is a good place to start on this mission. We note that large organisations have broadly welcomed the Report, but remain to be convinced that there is sufficient resolve to make a real difference.
It is at the micro level – individual workplaces – where so much can be achieved. This is where more and more energy is being consumed, yet where simple measures and inexpensive equipment can produce massive savings at little cost.
The Report seems to recognise this. It even states that the Government will lead the way. But we have been down that road before. Any energy efficiency company that has tried to locate, let alone fix, a meeting or do some work with a large government department, will know how difficult it can be.
The report estimates that the measures proposed on energy efficiency could result in a saving of 6-9 MtC around 4-6% of our total emissions in 2005, on top of the 12 MtC saving that will come from the policies announced in the 2006 Climate Change Programme by 2010.
Our company has embarked on a programme that would see us saving our customers 250,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2012 by targeting HVAC savings in the workplace. We are already well ahead of target in achieving this. Perhaps that figure alone is enough to open some doors in Whitehall!â€
