Wirral Methodist HA advertised for a deputy chief executive on 21 March. James Hughes met the man who got the job
Name
Allan Chan

How much are you paid?
I get more than £40,000.

What was your last job?
I was business consultant property manager for a software company, SX3.

Why did you change jobs?
There was too much travelling. I was spending three hours a day travelling. It meant I wasn't spending enough time with my family.

What's your new job like?
Being deputy chief executive doesn't only mean assisting the chief executive. My main remit is on the financial side, since I'm a qualified accountant.

Best bit so far?
Working with enthusiastic people. When you are surrounded by people like that who are so eager, it really helps you. Everyone was very welcoming.

Where's the challenge?
I have to make sure the company is financially sound. So one challenge is working to a tight budget but still finding ways of expanding a company and realising its potential.

What will you do next?
I would like to be a chief executive. The size of the organisation doesn't matter to me. I think the housing ethos is more important in the greater scheme of things.

What the boss thinks
Wirral chief executive Alun Hughes says: "The first thing I noticed about Allan was his cheerful enthusiasm, qualities which in a small housing association are needed in abundance."
