Innovation from a pioneer
The DX-NT400E from Mitsubishi can accommodate up to 600 Gb of hard disk recording space, using two 300 Gb HDDs; hard drives are not supplied with the unit, allowing users to fit the memory to suit their own requirements.

The model also has an unusual HDD caddy, which is not only removable but also interchangeable, meaning that recordings can be removed and stored. This may be necessary if an incident occurs and images are required as evidence. The purchase of additional HDDs can provide the user with a long-term storage option.

When Bench Testing this product last month, our experts concluded: "This is outstanding kit. It is no surprise that Mitsubishi has turned its attentions to digital video recorders and its wealth of experience clearly shows through.

"The DX-NT400 illustrates the point neatly and anyone accustomed to tape-based video recorders should immediately feel at home with it. More importantly, installers will not have to grapple with the steep learning curves involved in getting some digital video recording equipment up and running.

"That's not to meant to suggest that the NT400 has a basic specifica-tion: it is a highly specified design with many advanced features."

See you Later

Synectics, the matrix switching, control and digital recording manufacturer, claims to have released a 鈥渘ew standard鈥 of DVR 鈥 the Time-Lapse Later. It is aimed at town centres and other high-motion environments where picture quality is essential.

With Timer-Lapse Later, all cameras are initially recorded in real-time MPEG2. After a pre-defined period, typically 24 hours, automatic time-lapsing occurs to reduce the frame per second rate to eight. After a further time period, the frame rate is reduced again, to one, maintaining the quality of images archived against their time related evidential value.

The reasoning behind this is that a prime feature of public space recording is that it is far more likely that recorded images will have evidential value early on in their life, rather than at the end. If an event is important it is likely to be known about quickly.

Often the problem of affordability of DVRs is addressed by a compromise on picture quality and frame rates, or by using event-based recording such as motion detection, says Synectics.

The Synectics High Motion range incorporating Time-Lapse Later technology is said to maximise the effectiveness of digital storage requirements without compromising on the quality of evidential video footage.

Video milestone?

Norbain describes its Vista Solo as 鈥渢he first truly viable VCR replacement鈥. A single channel DVR, it combines modern high quality digital technology with the functionality and ease of use of the familiar VCR.

Offering recording speeds of up to 50 images a second, the Solo is said to deliver high quality images the equal of any DVR. When recording in a comparable 24-hour time-lapse mode (five pictures per second), the Solo provides seven days and 17 hours of storage to its internal hard drive.

Recordings are saved to a single 80 Gb removable hard drive, supplied as standard. The unit works with quad, multiplexer, switcher, matrix or single camera applications.

A simple replacement to a user鈥檚 existing VCR, migrating to the Solo has no impact on the rest of a user鈥檚 existing CCTV installation. Compatible with all leading multiplexers, the Solo includes VEXT output for easy multiplexer integration.

When Security Installer Bench Tested the Vista Solo in our October edition, our experts concluded: 鈥淚t is the closest thing yet to a replacement for the venerable time-lapse VCR.

鈥淢aybe this could turn out to be one of those rare milestones in the history of video surveillance technology.鈥
