Hospitals – and in particular their Accident & Emergency (A&E) Departments – are now regarded as one of the most dangerous environments in which to work. Right across the country doctors, nurses and administration staff are finding themselves subject to verbal abuse and physical intimidation on a regular basis.

Not only that, hospitals are also a ‘magnet’ for vandals and thieves who can cause major disruptions when valuable medical equipment is either lost or stolen.

As part of a ‘zero tolerance’ policy, the management at Leighton Hospital in Crewe have invested in a state-of-the-art security set-up to protect staff, deter attacks and provide police with suitable evidence for possible prosecutions.

The Case Group has just finished installing a combined access control-CCTV solution over two phases. Fifteen high resolution colour Spectra 3 domes from Pelco make up Phase One, monitoring the car parks, main entrances and adjacent roadways. They boast a PTZ capability which allows trained monitoring staff to track the movement of vehicles or observe any incidents.

Images are recorded on a 24-hour basis and viewed from a new Control Room staffed by security officers employed to work for the Mid Cheshire Hospitals Trust.

The second phase of works has seen 33 domes added to cover the A&E, Opthalmic, Paediatrics, Maternity and Children’s Wards, in addition to a dedicated ID system.

Supplied by MAXxess, the ID system controls access to each of the hospital’s seven car parking areas. Barriers prevent the general public from using these parking areas, while over 4,300 members of staff have been issued with access control/photo ID proximity cards for entry to general areas.
