Niall Dickson’s article (“Mediocre and uninspired”, HT 22 October) is somewhat confusing in that the front page-headline says that Dickson is slamming sheltered housing, but it reads as though he is actually attacking the care regime institutions or system. Which is it to be?
If the article was slamming sheltered housing then he appears to have little understanding of the positive effects that sheltered housing offer to thousands of older people. If the article doesn’t say that, the headline needs retracting.
This really has a demoralising impact on the thousands who work hard to improve the quality of life for tenants and residents of sheltered housing and, unfortunately, highlights that there is still an ignorance about sheltered housing and its benefits. In view of all the work that staff have had to absorb due to Supporting People, let us give credit where credit is due.
I have lost count of the times that tenants have said that if they won the lottery they wouldn’t move out. To those who think that sheltered housing is full of communal rooms that are only used for bingo, I suggest they check out www.shelteredhousing.org and see what is really happening.
