CIBSE has published TM30, Improved life cycle performance of mechanical ventilation systems. The publication reports the results of a Partners in Innovation project that explored ways of improving the life cycle performance of mechanical ventilation systems. The work was based on a wide range of research, involving desk analyses, case studies and laboratory work. The results indicate that it is possible to reduce the whole life cost through a revision of design criteria and alternative equipment selections.

TM30 shows how the required levels of ventilation system performance can be achieved and improved upon. In his foreword, task group chairman Steve Irving explains that these improvements can be made by way of reduced energy costs and associated carbon emissions, or be traded off with other aspects of the building design. A methodology for assessing whole life cost is also included.
