A social housing tenant has placed the assured tenancy for her flat up for auction on the auction website Ebay.
But she suspended the sale after Housing Today emailed her for a comment.

Although it was illegal to do so, the tenant – identified only as "missbongo" – hoped to sell her ground-floor, north-east London flat via the online auction site.

In her notes, she made plain that the right to buy the property from the landlord is also available as part of the deal.

Bids for the one-bedroom flat in Hackney had reached £11,100 by the time Housing Today went to press. The seller requested bidders pay within seven days of the auction's intended close on 29 January.

It is unclear who is the landlord of the home but Hackney council has ruled itself out because it only has secure tenancies. "Bidders could be the victims of fraud," said a spokeswoman.

Ebay prohibits the sale of contracts, including tenancies, but its website states: "We have no control over the quality, safety or legality of items listed."

Brendan Sarsfield, chief executive of New Islington & Hackney Housing Association, said: "It's not ours. But if one of our tenants did this, we would make an example of them and take the tenancy away."
