Workers at Liverpool's main housing maintenance firm are expected to vote on strike action after 38 workers were sacked last Friday.
Workers were told about the compulsory redundancies by letter. They are part of an ongoing dispute between management and workers at private maintenance firm Interserve (HT 17 April, page 9).
The firm claimed it had to make cutbacks after Liverpool council decided to transfer one-third of its stock to a number of housing associations, including Riverside and South Liverpool.
Officials from the T&G union said the action was "unacceptable, unnecessary and unlawful" and that the redundancies came out of the blue despite continuing attempts to resolve the crisis.
Workers planned to meet yesterday to decide whether to go ahead with industrial action. Union representatives, council leaders and Interserve bosses were also to meet on the same day.
