Spray day: Southampton council took a pragmatic approach to dealing with the problem of graffiti on 12 August by enlisting local children to produce a mural at the local shopping parade.

The council worked with the Children’s Fund in a bid to teach 10-13-year-olds about graffiti in a controlled environment, make them take pride in their surroundings and discourage them from antisocial behaviour. The workshop included painting tuition and sessions in the history and philosophy of graffiti.
