Solar gain: Gainsborough Studios in east London is one of three housing developments that won the national standard for excellence in design at the House Builders Federation's design conference on Wednesday.

The 253-flat site, which won the gold standard, includes 25% affordable homes. It was designed by architect Munkenbeck & Marshall and developed by Lincoln Holdings and Southern Housing.

Queen Elizabeth Park near Guildford and Charter Quay in Kingston-upon-Thames also won the gold standard.
