In response to the letter regarding the failure of some Scottish authorities to recognise MCIOB as a professional qualification (‘CIOB? Sorry that just won’t do’ CM, May), I can confirm that I am in exactly the same position as your correspondent, and I would welcome the question being raised not only within CM, but also within CIOB and the Scottish Ðǿմ«Ã½ Standards Agency.

I graduated in June 2002 with a BSc in Construction Management, and gained full membership of the CIOB in February 2004. I worked as an estimator with East Ayrshire Council for 12 years before becoming a building standards surveyor last year with the same authority.

A requirement of the new post - and the only way that I can progress to the top of the pay scale - is to gain full membership of RICS. East Ayrshire, like Inverclyde, does not recognise MCIOB as a professional qualification.

To do this I have had to go back to University to take further modules from the final year of the BSc in Ðǿմ«Ã½ Control, which will enable me to enrol on the RICS APC programme.

This issue surely warrants further discussion and investigation.
