Smaller contractors need to take in-house control of their health and safety management to save money and generate business, says Jamie Cliffe, managing director of training firm SMTS.
"Successful firms are realising that by focusing on health and safety themselves can actually help win business, as well as helping protect them from new legislation."
Cliffe believes that most small companies would only need to send two senior managers and five less senior employees on health and safety courses to gain adequate knowledge and skills required to keep their firm up to date on the latest health and safety issues.
"The cost of sending these people on a few courses, spread across a year, is a great deal less than paying a health and safety consultancy over the months and years," he says.
