This month sees the second installment of BSRIA's Rules of thumb guidelines for building services, a useful source of design data for every m&e engineer.
The second installment of BSRIA's Rules of Thumb looks at space and weight allowances for services and plant rooms, and includes a section on catering facilities and occupant densities. These should be used in the early stages of design prior to system analysis or plant selection. These rules of thumb should be used as a guide on plant room sizes, riser cupboard locations and plant capacities. However, watch out for poor information that fails to allow for installation, commissioning or maintenance of plant and systems.

The data from the Rules of Thumb guide has been derived from a wide variety of sources all of which are clearly referenced in the actual publication. It has been written to help engineers in the initial stages of designing a building and its services.

Thumb rules can prove useful values to inform the early design process and are also useful for getting an intial grasp of services costs. The guide has also been assessed for usefulness and relevance by a panel of experienced, practising engineers. Anyone wishing to purchase the complete Rules of Thumb guide should contact the BSRIA bookshop on 01344 426511 or visit www.bsria.co.uk
