Demolition work starts at Oxford Street store overseen by QS Davis Langdon

Cut and carve demolition work has started at John Lewis' Oxford Street store in central London. Contractor General Demolition is carrying out the work, part of a £60m renovation programme called Project Beacon. The firm has demolished two existing north and south light wells to make way for the installation of two glass-sided escalators, which will give cistomers uninterrupted views of 20 departments spanning seven floors. The escalators are due to be installed in September and the overall programme, which will increase shop floor space by 16%, is scheduled to complete in autumn 2007. The team working on the scheme includes QS Davis Langdon and main contractor Styles and Wood.
