Speaking at the BSRIA Briefing in November, Dawes outlined the GLA's draft strategy, which will be launched in its final format early in 2004.
She said that Ken Livingstone would use his mayoral planning powers to influence development of more sustainable building in the capital. This could include a requirement for energy use studies on proposed large developments.
This is part of a three-pronged strategy which also includes setting energy use and CO2 targets for London, and working in 'partnership' with London businesses.
Proposed targets for renewable energy include installation of 10 000 domestic photovoltaic systems, and 100 installations on commercial and public buildings. Six large and 500 small wind turbines are also on Livingstone's list, along with 25 000 solar water heating schemes.
Dawes also highlighted the potential of energy action areas: "These would be low carbon communities demonstrating a range of sustainable energy technologies and techniques across a number of applications."
The mayor has stated that his aim for energy policy is to develop London as an exemplary sustainable world-class city.
Livingstone also views the sustainable energy industry as a potential source of employment and new enterprise for the capital.
