A project team has been appointed for the restoration of a historic Manchester swimming pool given prominence in a recent BBC TV series,

Worcester-based historic specialist firm Firmingers has been appointed QS and Buro Four is the project manager on the £3m structural restoration of the Victoria Baths in south Manchester.

Firmingers partner Ian Wilson will work on the scheme, while Grellan Symes will represent Buro Four on the job. The architect on the scheme is Lloyd Evans Prichard and the structural engineer is Wright Mottershaw.

The first phase of the programme of works comes two and a half years after the pool won first place in BBC2 series Restoration, hosted by comedian Griff Rhys Jones. The venue polled more than 280,000 votes from the public and won £3.38m in cash.

The first phase consists of external and structural work to the front block of the building including roof repairs, repointing and restoration of stain-glassed windows.

Gill Wright, Victoria Baths project manager, said: "We are thrilled to be taking the first step towards restoration and can't wait to get the ball rolling and get the structural works underway. It is great to be able to finally see the £3m we were awarded as winners of the BBC Restoration in 2003 have an impact on the future of Victoria Baths."
