Intelligent helper
CCTV operators are being overloaded with video content they are not able to effectively monitor says Bull and Keeneo, a new partnership providing "intelligent" video.
The partnership's 4D (three spatial plus temporal) technology provides intelligence to help operators prevent crime by alerting them to suspicious behaviour.
A 4D image allows the operator to see the distances involved, for example, between a person and a suitcase. The technology alerts the operator to the case and to any "unusual" activity.
The software is said to be totally integrated with existing surveillance equipment and gives the potential for more cameras to be monitored by the same number of operators

Security in vein
Palm Secure from Fujitsu is a contactless palm authentication device based on the verification of veins.
Said to offer a high level of security, Fujitsu believes palm security will win out over fingerprint or iris recognition because: fingerprint identification can be hindered by dry skin or surface abrasions on the skin; and iris scanning can be difficult depending on the size of the user's eyes.
Palm Secure is being used at the Bank of Tokyo where ATMs are equipped with palm vein scanners. Users access accounts by having their palm scan compared to a pre-registered scan stored on their bankcard.
It is also being used in libraries at Naka City, near Tokyo as a replacement for conventional library cards and at the University of Tokyo as room access control.

'Most advanced fire detector'
System Sensor has developed an innovative solution to combat false alarms in automatic fire detection systems.
The COPTIR is the first multi-criteria fire detector to integrate four independent sensors into a single point fire detector.
It consists of independent carbon monoxide, photo, thermal and infra-red sensors all managed by an embedded microprocessor running sophisticated algorithms.
Uniquely, the fourth detection element is a light sensor that provides environment monitoring to improve the false alarm performance. It also improves response times to fast-flaming fires that have traditionally been a challenge to photo and photo thermal smoke detectors.
The continual monitoring of all four major products of a fire has resulted in a detector that has "ultra high immunity" against false alarms while responding "far more quickly" to an actual fire, says System Sensor.
It is said to be the first detector specifically optimised to address the false alarm problem while also offering a major improvement in response times. Extensive testing has confirmed it is a 'step change' in detection technology, says the company
