Combining technologies
The Veritec P2 sequential confirmation detector from Pyronix has been a finalist in the Security Excellence Awards and brings a combination of two different technologies to provide a simple solution.

The two detection devices – an air pressure change detector and a PIR detector – are combined within the same housing resulting in a dramatic reduction in installation time generating more revenue per installation when compared to the traditional multi-device method of providing sequential verification.

The PIR has independent relay outputs ensuring that ACPO and DD243 requirements are met for sequential confirmation signalling systems. It detects rapid changes in ambient atmosphere pressure and can differentiate between a forced entry and other pressure fluctuations. This sets off the first alarm followed by a confirmation signal when movement is detected. Its microprocessor controlled algorithms also ensure that the detector is immune from pets, climatic changes, sound and movement of signs etc.

The Veritec P2 is housed in a two-part plastic case, the cover being held in place by two plastic hooks. It should be mounted on a solid wall, avoiding close proximity to sources of heat.

Wise move
Rokonet has introduced the iWISE intruder detector series featuring breakthrough Anti-Cloak Technology (ACT) ensuring no burglar can pass undetected. The detector benefits from the dual technology's immunity to false alarms together with the higher detection capability of the microwave channel.

The ACT works by automatic switching from dual-channel PIR/MW mode to single-channel MW alarm triggering and back. Any attempt by a burglar to use camouflage techniques to conceal IR radiation will be detected by the ACT, which identifies the situation using built-in pattern recognition algorithms. It automatically switches the detector to trigger alarms based primarily on detection from the microwave channel for a predefined window of time.

ACT also overcomes the PIR technology's limitation of poor detection sensitivity when the ambient temperature is close to body temperature. When this occurs the detector automatically switches to single channel microwave triggering of alarms.

Undercover operation
Sure Vision is distributing a compact PIR detector, standalone camera and smart VCR all-in-one device that is manufactured by Video Domain.

The Memocam is a three-in-one device that needs just one mains cable to be set up and is aimed at sites where quick installation is required. Events are recorded on an internal memory card when activated by the built-in PIR alarm.

The device is covert, discreet and powerful and ideal for recording activities in a number of different locations.

Shape of the future
Bosch Security Systems (which changed its name from Detection Systems last year) has a ceiling mount detector that transcends the boundaries set by other detectors.

We bench tested the three-cornered DS939 PIR and found it unmatched in its capability of giving 360 degree coverage over a wide area of 70 feet (21.3m) in diameter, when mounted at a maximum height of 25 feet (7.6m).

It features three independent 120-degree PIRs, which can be individually adjusted for customised coverage. You can provide standard floor coverage or monitor the main floor plus an elevated loft area at the same time. The detector can give pinpoint coverage of areas such as cash registers and jewellery counters, with first step processing which helps to reduce false alarms from background environmental sources.

The manufacturer recommends mounting on a solid, vibration-free ceiling, using a reinforcing backing plate behind removable tiles in dropped ceilings.

After securing the mounting base, the PIR unit clips onto hinge pins, wiring is connected and the lens vertical adjusters are set.

Over a short range
Vision Fire and Security has added two new PIR units designed for use in short-range security applications to its Adpro product range.

The PRO18W and PRO45 complement the existing long-range detectors and provides a comprehensive, cost-effective and high performance solution for surveillance based protection.

The PRO18W offers a wide-angle field view, suited to monitoring the front of a building with continuous detection coverage from one metre in front of the mounting pole to a distance of 18 metres.

The PRO45 offers a defined narrow sensing curtain and protects perimeters with continuous detection coverage from one metre in front of the mounting pole to a distance of 45 meters.

The Adpro PIRs can be mounted at heights of up to 4.5 meters. They feature Adaptive Threshold Decoding, which alters the sensitivity levels to compensate for changes in the prevailing environmental conditions, maximising detection performance and reducing the incidence of false alarms.

Fully digital
Optex Europe's all-digital MX Series includes the MX-40PT. The 12m pet immune model is a dual technology unit combining PIR and microwave in one campact, attractive and easy-to-install range. All the models have 78 detection zones and spherical lens focused optics giving coverage of 85 degrees.

The MX Series also comprises patented technologies such as Quad Zone Logic, Advanced Digital Filtering and Microwave Area Shaping to keep false alarms to a minimum.

An Anti-Crosstalk system has also been incorporated allowing the PIR to avoid interference from other microwaves in the vicinity.

Pet immunity assured
Electronics Line's Mercury EL-5200 provides a range of 11m and ignores animals weighing up to 45kg. It has a dual element pyroelectric sensor and is fitted with a volumetric lens. A pulse count of one or two can be selected. It also has temperature compensation.

Security Installer's Bench Testers came to the conclusion that it performed well during stability testing and that the standard of design and manufacture represented very good value for money. The model comes with a 10 year guarantee.

Intelligent beast
Cooper Security, manufacturer of the Scantronic 430 PIR, says it is one of the most intelligent pet tolerant detectors on the market.

It uses Target Specific Imaging TM technology to differentiate between humans and animals up to 38kg, helping to avoid pet-generated false alarms without compromising security.

The 430 covers a distance of 12 meters using its revolutionary cylindrical lens technology. The digital detector can also determine between electrical spikes and genuine destructions, helping to prevent false alarms.

This detector shares the same housing as Scantronic's 420 Digital PIR and 460 Domestic Twintec and matches any decor.

Confirmation given
Optex Europe Ltd's new Sequad sequential confirmation detector contains two independent PIR detectors inside one housing. They provide two non-overlapping coverage patterns with two independent alarm outputs, giving the unit the ability to create reliable sequentially confirmed activations in accordance with current regulations.

Installation is said to be easy because the Sequad only requires one standard 8-core cable, thus making upgrading easier as installers only need to remove existing detectors and re-wire Sequad detectors to existing cabling.

There are two products in the Sequad range. Both provide wide-angle 85 degree coverage. The SQ-40 covers 12m x 12m and the SQ-60 covers 18m x 18m. Both units incorporate a host of Optex patented quad zone logic, advanced temperature compensation and noise reduction processing.

Frontier pioneer
The Viper Space System from ADE comprises a packaged kit of one passive infrared movement detector with an integral four-channel radio receiver and two battery-operated Viper sensors each with integral radio transmitters for use within a perimeter protection system.

The system is designed to give both volumetric and shock type zone information from a single hard-wired PIR using nine conductors to an ACPO 2000 compliant control panel for sequential interpretation.

It is also possible to interpret the zone activations from within the PIR software, and trigger a combined single pole normally closed output giving sequential confirmation to an older control panel via a conventional eight-core cable. Thus ADE has addressed the problem of retrofitting existing intruder alarms to comply with the latest confirmation requirements.

When activated by a potential intruder, the shock sensors on the frames of windows and doors transmit radio signals to a local receiver unit for zone interpretation. Other features include wire free shock sensors, wired PIR and radio receiver, immediate detection before entry gained, minimal damage, 24 hour protection and freedom of movement when not hampered.
